CMS-CCSQ Support for Advance Directives data class for USCDI v6
Data Element: Advanced Directives
- Recommendation: Reestablish the Advanced Directives data element and advance it to Level 2 and include in Final USCDI v6. We recommend it be placed ideally in an Advance Directives data class.
- Rationale: CMS supports PACIO’s continued advocacy of the Advance Directives data class. The Advance Directives data element is critical to enable the exchange of advance directives information that focuses on a narrative description and supporting documentation. Additionally, the US Core Goal supports this data element. Such integration would not only enhance patient autonomy but also improve the overall quality of care delivered in the healthcare system. This information is routinely captured in patient or encounter summary documents. For the Level 1 data elements under this data class, there have been advancements in both the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and FHIR standards having been balloted and now published, such as the FHIR Advance Directives Interoperability (ADI) Implementation Guide (IG).
