The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) created popHealth in 2010 as open source software that could import data, then calculate, display, and export electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs). As of December 2013, thanks to the hard work of Northwestern University , popHealth is now certified as a 2014 edition electronic health record module (CHPL Product Number: CC-2014-781600-3 ).

I am excited to announce that today, February 11, 2012, we are releasing CONNECT version 4.0, which supports the current federal IT standards and Meaningful Use Stage 2 core objectives related to the secure electronic exchange of information. This is done through CONNECT’s support of Direct project specifications and NwHIN transports (i.e., electronically sending and receiving patient data, registering immunization information, public health reporting and patient access to data).

The open source software (OSS) community is full of creative software coders developing amazing computer applications collaboratively. Recently I witnessed the power of their collaborative innovation first hand at the Open Source Convention (OSCON) in Portland, OR. This was the conference’s 12th year…but my first experience.
