Michael H. Zaroukian, MD, PhD, MACP, FHIMSS is Vice President & Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Sparrow Health System.  He is also Professor of Medicine, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University (MSU), where he served as CMIO from 2005-2011.

As a practicing primary care physician and board-certified clinical informatics executive, Dr. Zaroukian is responsible for providing physician leadership to the implementation and optimization of EHR system capabilities, as well as its use as an enabling technology for care transformation at Sparrow. He was named the 2014 Sparrow Physician of the Year in recognition of his contributions to the health system and community.  Dr. Zaroukian is also past-president of a national EHR user group.

Dr. Zaroukian has published research and given numerous regional, national and international presentations on the use of health information technology (IT) to improve patient care, research, education and administration. He is a former residency director, Councilor of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), and an informatics group participant at the 2002 Institute of Medicine Health Professions Education Summit.  In 2012, Dr. Zaroukian was an invited panelist at a White House session that brought senior Obama Administration officials together with leading experts to discuss strategies for advancing the use of health IT to improve healthcare quality and value. 

A recipient of the 2010 HIMSS Physician IT Leadership Award, Dr. Zaroukian received a "Top 25 Clinical Informaticists" award from Modern Healthcare in 2012 and a 2013 "Innovation Advocate Award" from Healthcare Informatics and the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS). He is a member of the HIMSS Board of Directors (North America), the HIMSS (Worldwide) Board of Directors, and the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) Board of Trustees.  In 2014, Dr. Zaroukian was included in the list of “26 of the Smartest People in Health IT” by Becker’s Hospital Review.  The American College of Physicians (ACP) Board of Regents also recently advanced Dr. Zaroukian to Mastership, the ACP’s highest designation. 

Dr. Zaroukian has served as a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Health Information Technology Advisory Group and the HIMSS Enterprise Information Systems Committee. He is also past chair of the HIMSS Ambulatory Information Systems Committee and the American College of Physicians Medical Informatics Committee. Dr. Zaroukian is also currently a member of the ONC Meaningful Use Workgroup and the Board of Advisors of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS).
