Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (FEHRM)
Nara Um, M.D., serves as the acting Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) for the Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (FEHRM) office. She is responsible for executive oversight of clinical, business and clinical information technology activities impacting the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs federal electronic health record (EHR) and the exchange of health data with private sector partners.
Prior to joining the FEHRM in August 2021, Dr. Um served as Chief Health Informatics Officer at VA San Diego Health Care System (VASDHS) for four years. Under her leadership, the VASDHS Clinical Informatics Service received the Coin of Appreciation from the Acting Deputy Secretary of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in July 2020 and the National HeRO Award from the VHA’s Office of the Under Secretary for Health in February 2021. Dr. Um is a Clinician in the federal health care system, having joined VA New York Harbor Healthcare System in 2012 as a Hospitalist and Primary Care Provider. Before joining VA, she provided care to geriatric patients in subacute and long-term care settings while working as a junior faculty member and a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She also worked as an Internist at Mid-Atlantic Kaiser Permanente Medical Group and MedStar Health.
Dr. Um is a graduate of the St. George’s University School of Medicine and Temple University Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition, she received a Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics.
