Susan is a nursing executive and national thought leader passionate about co-creating technology-enabled innovations, transforming health and care eco-systems to dramatically improve population health and wellbeing, with national and international reach. Susan believes we can achieve an affordable, sustainable learning health system – where consumers, providers and communities are dynamically engaged and thriving, with personalized health solutions achieving the triple aim. With over 30 years experience, Susan has served in a variety of roles transforming health and improving health of populations, including designing and managing a new Children’s Hospital Emergency Service, nursing and health system executive, new healthy community partnership and community health information network (CHIN) executive, clinical informatics and decision support executive, consultant and action researcher. Susan is the founder and CEO of WellSpring Consulting, supporting health care organizations and communities in the US and Canada, since 1994 to strengthen their own capacity for leadership and innovation in services, products and impact. Consulting and action research projects support diverse healthcare redesign, care delivery, technology innovation and payment model reform efforts. Clients have included SomaSens Corporation, Diverinset, CPM Resource Center, The Healthcare Forum, University of Texas School of Public Health, Veteran’s Health Administration, US Air Force, US Naval Post Graduate School, National League of Nursing, Sanofi Synthelabo, Society of Organizational Learning, Mayo Clinic, Baylor Healthcare and over 50 diverse hospitals and health systems in the US and Canada, and Healthy Community Collaborative of thirty-five U.S. communities & states. Susan currently is consulting to co-develop a community-based collaborative care model integrating community health workers for chronic disease intensive management, with the Public Health Institute and UC Davis School of Nursing. She also serves as a strategic and clinical informatics advisor to a San Diego based start up focused on sense making and co-producing care with big data and sensor technology, between patients and care teams, consumers and employers, and consumers and payers. She recently supported Diversinet Corporation, as Chief Health Informatics Officer, leading mobile care coordination and clinical integration vision into product development, sales, business and partner development, including development of mobile virtual health wallet, designed for preference sensitive care, shared care planning/outcomes adherence feedback, secure communications and consumer mediated exchange. Prior to this, she served in a vice-president role with a Reed Elsevier company, CPM Resource Center, building a clinical decision support and care transformation business, including leading its Business and International Strategies, Leadership Summits and International Consortium of diverse, interprofessional members with over 350 hospital and health system settings. Susan has recently served on the Health and Human Services (HHS)/Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) Health Information Technology (HIT) Consumer Technology Standards Workgroup; and the Consumer Engagement Advisory Council for National eHealth Collaborative (NeHc). She co-chairs a national initiative with the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI), Consumer e-Health and Engagement Task Force with pledge support for ONC’s Consumer eHealth and Blue Button communities. She serves on the TIGER Initiative Foundation Board. She is a member of the Health Records Banking Alliance; and is active with AMIA and HIMSS nursing special interest groups, providing national HIT strategy and policy feedback for Meaningful Use of Health IT, ACO, consumer e-health, shared decision making and care planning.
