Dr. Jorge A. Ferrer is a Health Informatics Practitioner with VHA, an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics and a practicing Licensed Surgeon Assistant (LSA) in the private sector.  He serves (2016-2017) in the American Medical Informatics Association’s Policy Committee and is a workgroup member in clinical information systems, clinical research informatics and global health informatics.  He served (2010-2014) on the federal steering committee in the Office of the National Coordinator Strategic Health Information Technology Advanced Research Project dedicated to patient-centered cognitive support which addresses usability of EHRs.  He served (2002-2010) as a government staff on the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics with VHA and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  He served (2016) in the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Certified Technology Comparison Task Force & Health Information Interoperability Experience Task Force.  He chaired (2014-2016) the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Innovation Committee and was a liaison to the HIMSS HIT User Experience Committee.  Prior to VHA, he was a Medical Officer at CMS and served as a technical advisor to the Consolidated Health Informatics eGov initiative to establish federal health information interoperability standards.  He was CMS’s HL7 EHR functional model & standards workgroup representative.  At CMS he led the VistA-Office EHR (VOE) project which is an ambulatory EHR system that CMS developed, based on the Veterans Health Administration's VistA clinical information system.  He did his Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Informatics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He is an Editor of Aspects of the Computerized Medical Record, Computers in Health Care, Health Informatics Series, Second Edition, Springer, 2006.  He was an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Health Sciences Informatics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  While at Johns Hopkins he was appointed by the Chief Information Officer to the Clinical Systems Advisory Committee at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.  He is an affiliate member of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Health Information Management Association, American Medical Informatics Association and Health Information Management Systems Society.
