Despite differences in care delivery and payment models, countries around the world are focused on advancing interoperability, galvanizing patient-centered care, empowering individuals, reducing administrative burden for clinicians, and improving the safety, quality, and effectiveness of the health care that’s delivered to their populations.

Enhancing Healthcare Interoperability: Launching the DaVinci Prior Authorization Support (PAS) Test Kit

There has been significant progress in interoperability among providers for treatment purposes, and while there is still considerable work to do, we now need to broaden our scope to also focus on payer-provider interoperability. The Interoperability Rules  finalized by our colleagues at CMS have laid down important cornerstones, and we at ONC are continuing to explore complementary infrastructure and policies to advance those efforts.

Rachel Nelson is the compliance and administration branch chief in ONC’s office of policy, regulatory and policy affairs division. She leads an interdisciplinary team of subject-matter experts focused on advancing information sharing and patient safety.

1. Tell us about some of the projects or initiatives that you lead.

I have a diverse portfolio, spanning development and implementation of specific policies around information sharing, supporting enforcement of the ONC Health IT Certification Program’s regulations, and supporting the health IT safety work spearheaded by ONC’s clinical division.

Advancing Nationwide, Trusted Health Information Networks

Health IT has become integral to health care delivery and this trend has accelerated since the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of 2009. Hundreds of thousands of physician offices, hospitals, and health systems now use ONC-certified health IT to store, process, access, exchange, and use electronic health information (EHI), setting the groundwork for nationwide interoperability. A new report to Congress provides updates on this progress led and coordinated by ONC.
