When should I start the electronic health record adoption process?

NOW is the time to for electronic health record (EHR) adoption– there is an unprecedented amount of help available.

  • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is making available up to $27 billon in electronic health record (EHR) incentives. The last year to begin participation in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program is 2014, and the last year to begin participation in the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program is 2016. Penalties begin in the Medicare program in 2015 for eligible professionals that are not “meaningful users."
  • Your local Regional Extension Center (REC) can help. Your local Regional Extension Center (REC) can help you throughout the EHR adoption and implementation process. RECs are located in every region of the country to help health care providers select, implement, and become adept and meaningful users of EHRs. Contact your local REC to find out if you are eligible for free or reduced-price support.

The combination of CMS incentive payments and REC support to help you achieve meaningful use is a one-time opportunity - now is the time for EHR adoption.
