The Federal Advisory Committees

There are two committees, under the auspices of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA), charged with making recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT.

• The Health IT Policy Committee makes recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT on a policy framework for the development and adoption of a nationwide health information infrastructure, including standards for the exchange of patient medical information.
• The Health IT Standards Committee is charged with making recommendations to the National Coordinator for Health IT on standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria for the electronic exchange and use of health information.

Membership for both committees and their respective workgroups is currently at capacity. You can apply now for the FACA Workgroup Database to stay informed as new membership opportunities become available.

How You Can Participate in Health IT Policy-Making

Members of the public, including providers and professionals, are invited to participate in FACA public conference calls and meetings. Check out the FACA calendar to learn more.

Citizens can also participate in the federal rule-making process. You can submit public comments during the 60-day comment period for Notice of Proposed Rule Makings issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
