Next week the Department of Health & Human Services – and ONC – is helping to kick off National Health IT Week (#NHIT) with the third annual Consumer Health IT Summit: Accelerating the Blue Button Movement. Registration is full, but you can sign up for the wait list or participate virtually online. This year’s National Health IT Week Consumer Summit celebrates consumer and patient engagement in health and healthcare via health information technology. This year we’ve decided to include “Blue Button” in its title.

As part of our ongoing effort to improve patient matching across disparate systems, we are beginning a collaborative project to help identify the common denominators and best practices being used by private sector health care delivery systems and Federal agencies. By identifying and recommending standardization of the basic attributes most commonly used for patient matching, we are looking to improve patient safety, care coordination and efficiency.

Yesterday, the Health IT Policy Committee (HITPC) accepted and approved recommendations from the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA) working group for a risk-based regulatory framework for health information technology. The working group’s recommendations suggest a scope for an IT framework, risk and innovation criteria, and approaches for avoiding regulatory duplication.
