Regional Extension Centers (RECs)

Your Local Regional Extension Center: A Trusted Advisor

Your Regional Extension Center (REC) is not an electronic health record (EHR) vendor trying to sell an EHR system or a product. Your local REC’s goals are the same as yours – to improve health care quality for patients and maximize your overall productivity by helping you achieve meaningful use. Your local REC will help you navigate the vendor landscape and make an objective decision as you select or upgrade to a certified EHR.

The REC’s role as a resource for all phases of EHR implementation compliments the vendor’s role of helping your organization implement and service a specific EHR system. You do not have to choose to work with just your REC or just your EHR vendor.

RECs are different from other IT consultants, as the REC program is an extension of the Department of Health and Human Services and receives grant funding from ONC. With these grant funds, your local REC may provide free or reduced-price EHR implementation support.

Your Local Regional Extension Center Can Help

Your local REC can help you as you adopt and implement an EHR system. RECs are located in every region of the country to help health care providers select, implement, and become adept and meaningful users of EHRs. Contact your local REC to find out if you are eligible for free or reduced-price support.
