Combat Zone Period
Description

This data element is the self-reported date range(s) when a person worked in what is considered a combat zone. Both civilian workers, such as Department of Defense contractors, and military service members could have worked in combat zones.

  • CSTE supports inclusion of this measure into USCDI v3: Very supportive of including work information in USCDI – important for assessing increased risk of conditions related to I/O.
    • Specific job title and workplace address are also critical for outbreak investigation.

We strongly recommend inclusion of this element because it is part of SDOH.

SDOH:  Working in a military combat zone is associated with short and long-term risks to health, both physical and mental. Specific risks and health outcomes have been described for various combat zones
