Physiologic measurements of a patient that indicate the status of the body’s life sustaining functions.

Data Element

Oxygen delivery device
Description

In addition to respiratory rate, pulse oxygen saturation and inhaled oxygen concentration, the method of oxygen delivery should also be specified. Common methods include 'Nasal Cannula', 'Face Mask', 'Non-rebreather Mask', 'High Flow Nasal Cannula', 'BIPAP', 'CPAP' and 'Ventilator'. This would provide critical additional context to understanding a patient's respiratory status, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic which predominantly causes illness with pneumonia. This data element is often recorded in the electronic medical record by nursing and thus available.
