ONC Approves a Second Alternative Testing Method
In an ongoing effort to strengthen the ONC Health IT Certification Program, ONC announced today the approval of another alternative testing method. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) successfully demonstrated that its immunization transmission testing method, part of the Immunization Integration Program (HIMSS-IIP), can serve as an alternative to the ONC-developed testing method. Read the Health IT Buzz Blog post to learn more. A previous alternative method by National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) electronic clinical quality measure was approved in June.

Other Health IT Updates National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM): Cybersecurity in the Workplace is Everyone’s Responsibility- Anywhere, Anytime 24/7
Creating a culture of cybersecurity is critical for all healthcare organizations‒ large and small – and must be a shared responsibility among all employees. As recent major cybersecurity incidents have shown, cyber criminals often rely on human error – like creating easy-to-guess passwords – to gain access to systems and information.

In order for the health care system to keep health care information secure, every stakeholder involved in health IT—payers, providers, vendors, and patients themselves—must take measures to ensure the protection of patient health information. Privacy and security of patient health information is fundamental for interoperability. To that end, HHS has developed a number of health IT privacy and security resources and guides to help the health care industry implement privacy and security safeguards:

  • A 10-step plan for health care providers, which includes privacy and security tips on preparation, risk analysis and action, risk management, and meaningful use
  • Privacy and security web-based training modules
  • CyberSecurity and mobile device privacy and security best practices
