Health Information Exchange: From Standards to Practice

The recent release of the Stage 2 Meaningful Use final rule includes an important requirement: Health care providers should be able to exchange information electronically using his or her electronic health record (EHR). By 2014, a provider attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 2 should be able use their EHR to share an electronic copy of a care summary and relevant documentation with another provider, regardless of which vendor produced the EHR that either is using.

Meaningful Use Grids: Quick Reference to Navigation

Most days I typically have my nose buried in either the Meaningful Use or Standards and Certification Criteria final rules (in a majority of cases both) searching for answers to questions I’ve received. Finding the right place quickly often proves to be the most difficult challenge. This led me to look for a way to more efficiently find the relevant parts of the rules. With the help of some of my staff, we developed quick reference grids to accomplish this goal.

Certified EHR/Health IT Products List Now Available

Health care providers who are eligible to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs now have a new tool to help them on their road to meaningful use. As of November, ONC’s official Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL) identifies EHR technologies that have been tested and certified as being technically capable of supporting those providers’ achievement of meaningful use based on Stage 1 criteria outlined in HHS rules published on July 28 of this year.
